Sterile Processing Technician

Job Title:              Sterile Processing Technician 
 
Overview:           The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, sterilizing and processing of the Operating Room instruments.
 
Reports to:          Director of Nursing

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Organizes and prepares the SPD area for the daily workload.
  2. Performs daily monitoring and recording. Of autoclaves such as biologicals, Bowie Dick tests and graph changes and reports unusual findings to the Director of Nursing.
  3. Prepares, monitors and records all solutions necessary for sterilization.
  4. Cleans, assembles and sterilizes the Operating Room instruments in collaboration with the Operating Room team for those items needed that day to optimize the efficiency of the Operating Room schedule.
  5. Performs routine processing of instruments and items needed for the Operating Room.
  6. Maintains a good working knowledge of the equipment, including, the autoclaves, washer/decontaminator and ultrasonic cleaner.
  7. Maintains a supply list and notifies the Director of Nursing of needs.
  8. Maintains proper sterilization records and documents accordingly.
  9. Assists in procuring items that have been recalled.
  10. Performs routine and preventative maintenance care on instruments.
  11. Participates in staff meetings and inservices; serves on Center committees as requested by the Director of Nursing.
  12. Exhibits a professional and courteous approach to all patients, practitioners, colleagues and visitors.
  13. Adheres to Center policies and practices.
  14. Responds to Center emergencies as appropriate.
  15. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of patient and Center activities.
  16. Arrives promptly for duty.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Education and Experience:
  1. High school diploma.
  2. Diploma from an accredited program in Sterile Processing
  3. Previous experience in a Sterile Processing Department.
 
Other Qualifications and Considerations:
                1.  Occasional need to handle potentially dangerous materials.
  1. May require unanticipated need to work overtime.
  2. Ability to hand multiple tasks concurrently.
  3. Good interpersonal communication skills.
  4. Excellent work ethic and commitment to teamwork.
